The end of World War 1 caused many issues for farmers. between the rise of prices for farming equipment and the lower pay they were receiving for crops they struggled to support their familes. The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) suggested selling puppies, a low-effort, cost efficient method of making money. Farmers quickly converted cages, coops and hutches to house dogs and quickly began breeding them. After 40 of its inception what had started off as a means to support a family has snowballed into a multinational behemoth. Securing a profit of the suffering of animals. Puppy mills now plague every state either as large scale operations or backyard breeders. The problem with this vast quantity of puppy mill operators is first, they are soley driven by profit and not care. Puppy mills do not provide the dogs within their captivity with proper care or comfort. The mother and father dogs sole purpose are to breed and when they no longer can they are euthanized. Puppies are raised in terrible conditions and can result in developing medical conditions that put strain on the families looking to adopt a new family member. On average 2.6 million puppies are sold from puppy mills or less-than reputable breeders who are only looking to make money. Recent discrimination towards pet stores who buy pups from puppy mills have forced the mills to reach out to families themselves. Allowing them to fool buyers. Secondly, with so many puppies being bought from either pet stores, then subsequently bought by families. Or the mills themselves being capable of selling their pups to families individually has caused overpopulation of dogs left in pounds in kennels. These dogs deserve a loving home too, some dogs will live most, if not all, of their lives behind cages. Worse still, to control overpopulation pounds and kennels will utilize euthanasia. Resulting in the dogs life cut short of both happiness and a loving family. So what can be done in ending this monstrous method of churning a profit. Many non-profit organizations have formed to raise awareness to the public about what puppy mills are and how to avoid them. Furthermore, these organizations also utilize volunteers to run their operations, any funding them receive from donators or otherwise goes towards their advertising or charity. These orgainzations work tirelessly to not only stop puppy mills, but also house dogs the pounds would kill to give them a chance of finding a forever home and dont attempt to control overpopulation with euthanasia.
